Koh Samui is small – you can drive around the island in about an hour – but each area has a very different character. Where you buy affects your lifestyle, your rental income and your resale value. This guide compares the best areas to buy property in Koh Samui, from busy Chaweng to quiet Maenam, so you can decide which part of the island suits you.
Koh Samui Property Market at a Glance
According to C9 Hotelworks’ Samui Property Market Update (June 2025), the island’s residential market is worth around THB 30.3 billion, with condominiums now making up just over half of new supply. The Bophut district – which includes Chaweng, Fisherman’s Village and the airport – holds the majority of residential inventory, followed by Maret (Lamai) and Maenam. Villa rentals also continue to grow, with average villa occupancy above 70%.
Bophut & Fisherman’s Village – Best All-Rounder
Bophut on the north coast is the island’s most popular area for buyers. It combines the charming Fisherman’s Village, beach restaurants, international schools, supermarkets and quick access to the airport.
- Best for: families, holiday homes and rental investors.
- Property: sea-view pool villas on the hillside, modern condos and townhouses.
- Why buy: strong year-round rental demand and good resale liquidity.

Chaweng & Chaweng Noi – For Rental Demand and Nightlife
Chaweng is Samui’s busiest beach town, with the longest beach, the most hotels, shopping at Central Festival and lively nightlife. Chaweng Noi, just to the south, is quieter with hillside sea views.
- Best for: short-term rental investors and buyers who want everything on their doorstep.
- Property: condos close to the beach and sea-view villas in the hills.

Lamai – Relaxed Beach Town with Great Value
Lamai on the east coast is the island’s second-largest beach town – more laid-back than Chaweng, but with plenty of restaurants, cafés, gyms, Muay Thai camps and a weekly night market. It is popular with long-stay residents, digital nomads and families.
- Best for: living on the island full-time, wellness and value-for-money investment.
- Property: pool villas with sea or jungle views and condos within walking distance of Lamai Beach.
- Why buy: prices are generally lower than in Bophut and Chaweng, with strong long-term rental demand.

Choeng Mon & Plai Laem – Upmarket and Peaceful
On the north-east tip of the island, Choeng Mon and Plai Laem offer calm bays, luxury resorts and some of Samui’s most exclusive villas – yet Chaweng and the airport are only minutes away.
- Best for: luxury buyers and premium holiday rentals.
- Property: high-end sea-view pool villas.

Maenam & Bang Por – Quiet North Coast Living
Maenam and neighbouring Bang Por on the north coast have long, calm beaches, a relaxed village feel and views towards Koh Phangan. They are ideal if you want peace and quiet but still want to reach Bophut in 10–15 minutes.
- Best for: retirees, families and buyers looking for space.
- Property: beachfront and sea-view villas, often on larger plots.

The West Coast – Sunsets and Space
Areas such as Bantai, Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam on the west coast are known for spectacular sunsets, fewer tourists and more affordable land. Infrastructure is more limited, so this side suits buyers who value privacy over convenience.
